PROFILE OF FIREFLY SOLAR, 2012 BGA WINNER: Berti Investments sits down with Firefly Solar Founder & CEO Andy Mead to discuss what winning the 2012 Berti Green Accelerator meant for his company:
How did winning the BGA affect your business? What were the key benefits?
Winning BGA gave Firefly the the much needed funds and business support to take the company from the start-up phase into the growth phase. With the economic crisis making it difficult for small businesses to access funds, the BGA fills this much needed gap for British clean Tech SMEs. The people behind BGA share a common vision with Firefly Solar. This shared vision paired with the extensive experience of the management of Berti Investments and their extend network enabled Firefly to get the advise and support it needs to grow in a sustainable manor.
Over the 6 months of Hamilton Bradshaw (HB) mentorship, how have those changes improved your business and helped you achieve your goals?
The HB mentorship helped Firefly ensure the foundations for growth were in place, this covered support with ensuring the company’s employment and legal affairs were compliant and assistance with how best to recruit key members of the growing management team. HB’s experience in the field of recruitment meant that they have access to some of the best talent in the market place and through this support Firefly could access this talent more easily.
As a CEO, what do you believe the value is/ has been in having a mentor’s support at the early stage of your business?
As a young first time CEO there is a lot to learn as the business evolves and grows. Having access to those who have been there and done it is invaluable to help guide new CEOs along the way.
How has Berti in particular helped your business since winning the BGA in 2012?
Without Berti, Firefly would not have been able to move to new premises, expand the staff and grow the business at the same speed. The management of Berti have ensured that their time is made available to Firefly on an ongoing basis. Firefly have had access to a high profile network of business leaders as a result of association with Berti. This culminated in appointing Jeremy Leggett as Chairman - one of the industry’s leading thinkers.
What, if anything, did you learn from applying and pitching for the BGA before you knew you had won?
BGA was the first major investment pitch I had done. The experience helped me improve my presentation skills and taught me that the investors were looking at me as much if not more than the business. As a founder of Firefly, my continued passion for the business and vision for the future became the biggest asset. Prior to applying for Berti, I believed the products the company developed were the most important thing.
What tips would you give to a business considering applying for the BGA 2013?
Go for it! ensure you have a tight business plan, a good leader and that the business has market potential within 12 months and is not too early stage - this is a growth accelorator not an investment for companies at the early stage of product development.
